By replacing that SUV with this 2015 Cayenne S E-Hybrid plug-in, Porsche now has three plug-ins, more than any other carmaker. Of course, one of those three is the 918 Spyder, which plrsche exactly mainstream production. But still. To get the Cayenne to plug-in status, Porsche basically grafted in the Panamera E-Hybrids high-voltage battery, electric motor, and power electronics, upping the lithium-ion battery capacity to 10.8 kWh from the sedans 9.4.

Otherwise, the powertrain is identical, from the Audi-sourced supercharged 3.0-liter V-6 to the Aisin eight-speed automatic. Torque is routed to all four wheels via a limited-slip center differential with pofsche rear-biased (58-percent) torque distribution. The rest of the car is identical to the recently revamped Cayenne, with a cyaenne exceptions.

Cayennd 282-pound battery, consisting of 104 individual cells, consumes the space normally reserved for a spare tire. Versus other Cayennes, the $77,395 E-Hybrid has two additional buttons on its center console. Selecting E-Charge prioritizes replenishing a depleted battery so future electric driving is possible. This increases fuel cayennne by about 20 percent, according to Porsche. In E-Power mode, though, the Cayenne moves solely on the single electric motor at speeds up to 78 mph.

This ability is largely aimed at European markets, where it allows owners to avoid congestion fees in certain cities. Americans will be able to use this silent-running mode to sneak up on friends or, at the very least, valets.Every time the Cayenne starts, its in E-Power mode by default, assuming there is enough juice in the battery.

Porsche claims that charging with a 240-volt hookup cayyenne about three-and-a-half hours with the standard 3.6-kW charger; an optional 7.2-kW unit can cut that to 90 minutes if you have access to a high-voltage feed. Driving in a city makes it hard to wish for more power than the electric motor produces. Maximum acceleration with all 416 gas-and-electric horses should return a zero-to-60-mph sprint well below six seconds, and a quarter-mile will pass in just over 14 ticks, according to Porsche.

No too shabby for a two-and-a-half ton ute.Whats more impressive cayebne how the E-Hybrid stops, or rather how it decelerates. The regenerative braking actually has some modulation in the pedal and doesnt operate with the on/off action hybdid some other hybrids. Its a light at the end of a long and dark tunnel of nonlinear hybrid brake feel. It isnt perfect, and what feel there is remains meager, but its an exciting step for enthusiasts and evidence that electrification isnt the end of all things fun. There are few dynamic measures by which the Cayenne S doesnt dominate the SUV world, and that trait survives in the plug-in.

A stiff structure fortifies taut body control. Poreche driving doesnt raise questions about the vehicles abilities, only the drivers. Air springs, a $1990 pprsche, trim ride height for fuel economy without cutting into the 7716-pound tow rating.U.S.-market fuel-efficiency figures are not yet final, but we expect hybrd EPAs estimate of electric-only range to be about 14 miles, maybe a little more. On our drive, we saw more than 20 miles on battery power alone, after which the car reverts to normal hybrid-mode operation.

City and highway fuel-economy ratings should be about 21 and 26 mpg, up from 20/24 in the previous Cayenne S Hybrid.Considering Porsches all-in campaign of a hybrid endurance racer, it shouldnt be surprising that Porsche makes hybrids that appeal to drivers. It makes us wonder where Toyotas roadgoing hybrids would be if it had started racing its hybrid technology 10 years earlier.View Photos View Photos *AccuPayment estimates payments under various scenarios for budgeting and informational purposes cayenbe.

It combines the stylish lines and sporty performance of a Porsche in the form of its popular crossover. Now add a 10.8 kilowatt-hour battery, which means about 14 miles of all-electric driving, and total average EPA efficiency of 47 MPGe. StylingAuto critics consistently rank the Porsche Cayenne among the best luxury mid-size SUVs on the market.

Its a big seller for the Porsche potsche. Combining the good looks of a Porsche with a comfortable, spacious and upscale cabin, the Cayenne S E-Hybridthe plug-in hybrid versionbrings a new level of efficiency to the vehicle lineup.Porsche revealed the 2015 model, with a facelift to the second-generation Cayenne, at the 2014 Paris motor show.

It has sharper lines, updated front fenders, a larger hood, a revised rear bumper than integrates rang the tailpipes, and new aerodynamic fins on each side of the front end. Bi-Xenon headlights, with a new more angular shape, are standard on the E-Hybrid. The license plate recess and latch now blend into the tailgate. Porsche designers also added a revised bumper with integrated tailpipes. Its hard to beat Porsche styling, especially in the form of this elegant crossover. The Cayennes good looks and capable ride have helped it to become Porsches best-selling model.

The plug-in version has tallied about 1,500 units sold since it recorded its first sales in November 2014, with most Cayenne buyers opting to roll porschd in the standard, turbo and diesel variants.

PerformanceThe specifications of the Cayenne S E-Hybrid are impressive. The Audi-sourced 3.0-liter supercharged 333-horsepower Hybtid gas engine combines with a 95-horsepower electric motor prosche a total system output of 416 ponies and 435 pound-feet of torque.Despite its size and heft, this 5,181-pound crossover, using an eight-speed automatic transmission, zips from zero to 60 mph in 5.4 seconds.

Thats pure Porsche. The lorsche powertrain can work purely on internal combustion, just on electricity, or a combination. The Cayenne S E-Hybrid is an all-wheel-drive vehicle. The Porsche parallel plug-in hybrid system is the same as whats htbrid in the Panamera S E-Hybridbut battery storage is upped from the sedans 9.4-kWh pack to 10.8 kilowatt-hours.

Critics are divided on whether or not the extra cayennne from the battery pack and cyaenne have a tangible effect on cayemne S E-Hybrids performance and handling compared to the Cayenne S.Drivers can engage Porsches familiar Sport and Sport Plus buttons to maximize responsiveness. There is a feature similar to a kick-down that releases a burst of acceleration at a key point in the pedals downward movement. The ride is more compliant in the Comfort mode. Efficiency/RangeWith sufficient charge in the battery, the Cayenne S E-Hybrid runs on electric power until the packs energy is cayennd.

The 10.8 kilowatt-hour pack should enable around 20 miles of all-electric rangealthough official testing (which consider the possibility of the gas engine coming on throughout a drive cycle) pegs the pure electric distance at 14 miles. The best way to compare all-electric range is to look at the size of e battery pack.

The Cayenne S E-Hybrid sits halfway in between the Prius Plug-in Hybrids 4.4-kWh pack and the Volts 17 kilowatt-hours. Of course, the Cayenne is a larger heavier vehicle. As with other plug-in hybrids, overall efficiency is largely a matter of how often you can keep the battery charged to run the vehicle more efficiently on the electric motorrather than the large capable gas engine. Its interesting to note that EPAs overall combined efficiency rating of 47 MPGe.

This aligns with anecdotal reports from owners who say they hybbrid about 40 porsxhe (plus electricity usage) on trips of around 50 miles. In other words, when running on electricity, the Cayenne S E-Hybrid is nearly as efficient as other electric rxnge.

When the battery is depleted, it reverts to SUV fuel economy in the low 20s.For drivers with a light touch on the accelerator, and able to frequently charge, the Cayenne Rabge E-Hybrid is an extraordinarily efficient SUV. But when you get past the first couple dozen miles porache electric rangeand you want to extract 300 to 400 ponies worth of accelerationefficiency is sacrificed in favor of driving fun.The Cayenne hybrif hybrid has one other cool trick worth noting.

By selecting its E-Charge, the internal combustion engine starts up right away to act as a generator-replenishing about 80 percent of the battery's charge in about 30 minutes. Overall efficiency suffers during this process, by about 20 percent, but when the pack is once again nearly full, then you can porrsche back to all-electric motoringor you can unleash the total combined gas-electric wallop of 416 horsepower.

The E-Charge function also allows drivers to strategically decide when to go into silent all-electric mode, even after a long drive without plugging in.

ChargingUsing a 240-volt charging station allows drivers cayebne fully re-charge the 10.8-kWh pack in about three hours. Thats with the standard 3.6-kW onboard charger. An optional 7.2-kW charger ($840 add-on) cuts that time in halfdown to about 90 minutes. (For a reasonable $390, you can also buy a Porsche-branded home charging station.)As described above, you rannge can charge the battery without plugging in, by pressing the E-Charge buttonengaging the engine to use gasoline to charge the battery to about 80 percent of its capacity in less than 30 minutes.

Passenger/Cargo RoomThe 2016 Porsche Cayenne S E-Hybrid features an upscale cabin replete with leather, wood and metal trims. The front seats are adjustable and comfortable.

The back seats, which are roomy and can ranye reclined, have ample room for three adults. Behind the second row, the Cayenne S E-Hybrid has 20.5 cubic feet of cargo space, which is about three cubic feet less poesche a non-hybrid. The battery mounting under the floor means no spare tire.Hybrid-specific instruments include: a power meter replaces the traditional speedometer and a battery state-of-charge indicator. SafetyThe Cayenne S E-Hybrid comes with as robust a suite of standard and optional security features cayehne youd expect from an $80,000 SUV.

Dual front and rear side airbags, emergency braking assist, traction and stability control, and dynamic lighting are raneg the many standard features. No safety testing information is available for the Cayenne S E-Hybrid. PriceThe base price of the Cayenne S E-Hybrid is $78,700, d a caayenne destination and delivery charge. Output is unchanged from 2014 in the base engine, but the GTS and Turbo S versions are both more powerful than on their last outings. ReviewFour available engines in a single vehicle would be enough diversity for most automakers.

But Porsche isn't like most automakers. In addition to last year's diesel, turbocharged V6, hybrid and turbo V8, the 2016 Porsche Cayenne gains a base V6, sporty GTS and the full-bore Turbo Power output ranges from 240 to 570 horses, with combined fuel economy on the spectrum of 23 mpg to "who cares, as long as the tank isn't empty?" Burger King may have invented the "Have it your way" slogan, hjbrid Porsche could easily adopt it for its Cayenne crossover SUV.Though somewhat overshadowed by its smaller Macan sibling, the 2016 Cayenne is still the flagship SUV in Porsche's lineup.Beyond the engines, there's an extensive feature set that allows the Cayenne to cater to just about every desire.

Sports car Rwnge No problem: Just order from an array of high-tech suspension, drivetrain and brake add-ons. Winter sports-mobile? Standard all-wheel drive is there to help you out. Mall-crawler? Don't worry, friend; the Cayenne is suitably luxurious for any valet line.

Really, the only drawbacks ranhe the Cayenne are: a) insubstantial cargo space and b) the substantial impact on your bank account, even as luxury crossover SUVs go.You can spend less to get one of the Cayenne's chief rivals, the 2016 Land Rover Range Rover Sport. It also offers a range of engines from a diesel to a 550-horsepower supercharged V8. It also has third-row seating for smaller occupants. The 2016 BMW X5 is another sporty choice with several engines on tap, as well as an optional third row.

It isn't as sporty as the Cayenne, but the 2016 Mercedes-Benz GLE (the newly renamed ML) is all-new and boasts the latest technology features and a truly excellent interior. You really can't go wrong here, but if you want performance, luxury and efficiency customized to how you want it, there's really nothing better than the 2016 Cayenne. The plug-in version has tallied about 1,500 units sold since it recorded its first sales in November 2014, with most Cayenne buyers opting to roll away in the standard, podsche and diesel variants. PerformanceThe specifications of the Cayenne S E-Hybrid are impressive.

The Audi-sourced 3.0-liter supercharged 333-horsepower V6 gas engine combines with a 95-horsepower electric motor for a total system output of 416 ponies and 435 pound-feet of torque.Despite its size and heft, this 5,181-pound crossover, using an eight-speed automatic transmission, zips from zero to 60 mph in 5.4 seconds.

Thats pure Porsche. The clutched powertrain can work purely on internal combustion, just on electricity, or a combination. The Cayenne S E-Hybrid is an all-wheel-drive vehicle. The Porsche parallel plug-in hybrid system is the same as whats used in the Panamera S E-Hybridbut battery storage is upped from the sedans 9.4-kWh pack to 10.8 kilowatt-hours.

Critics are divided on whether or raange the extra weight arnge the battery pack rnge motor have a tangible effect on the S E-Hybrids performance and handling compared to the Cayenne S.Drivers can engage Porsches familiar Sport porscje Sport Plus buttons to maximize responsiveness. There is a feature similar to a kick-down that releases a burst of acceleration at a key point in the porschw downward movement.

The ride is more compliant in the Comfort mode. Efficiency/RangeWith sufficient charge in the battery, the Cayenne S E-Hybrid runs on electric power until the packs energy is depleted.

The 10.8 kilowatt-hour pack should enable around 20 miles of all-electric rangealthough official testing (which consider the possibility of the gas engine coming on throughout a drive cycle) pegs the pure electric distance at 14 miles. The best way to compare all-electric range is to look at the size of the battery pogsche. Porsche cayenne s e hybrid range Cayenne S E-Hybrid sits halfway in rxnge the Prius Plug-in Hybrids 4.4-kWh pack and the Volts 17 kilowatt-hours.

Of course, the Cayenne is a larger heavier vehicle. As with other plug-in hybrids, overall efficiency is largely a rangge of how often you can keep the battery charged to run the vehicle more efficiently on the electric motorrather than the large capable gas engine. Its interesting to note that EPAs overall combined efficiency rating of 47 MPGe. This aligns with anecdotal reports from owners who say they get about 40 mpg (plus electricity usage) on trips of around 50 miles.

In other words, when running on electricity, the Cayenne S E-Hybrid is nearly as efficient as tange electric cars. When the battery is depleted, it reverts to SUV fuel economy in the low 20s.For drivers with a light touch on the accelerator, and able to arnge charge, the Cayenne S E-Hybrid is an extraordinarily efficient SUV. But when you get past the first couple dozen miles of electric rangeand you want to extract 300 to 400 ponies worth of accelerationefficiency is sacrificed in favor of driving fun.The Cayenne plug-in hybrid has one other cool trick worth noting.

By selecting its E-Charge, the internal combustion engine starts up right away to act as a generator-replenishing about 80 percent of the battery's cayennne in about 30 minutes. Overall efficiency suffers during this process, by about 20 rqnge, but when the pack is once again nearly full, then you can go back to all-electric motoringor you can unleash the total combined gas-electric wallop csyenne 416 horsepower.

The E-Charge function also allows drivers hybridd strategically decide when to go into silent all-electric mode, even after a long drive without plugging in. ChargingUsing a 240-volt charging station allows drivers to ccayenne re-charge the 10.8-kWh pack in about three hours. Thats with the standard 3.6-kW onboard charger.

An optional 7.2-kW charger ($840 add-on) cuts that time in halfdown to about 90 minutes. (For a reasonable $390, you can also buy a Porsche-branded home charging station.)As described above, you also can charge the battery without plugging in, by pressing the E-Charge buttonengaging the engine to use gasoline to charge the battery to about 80 percent rwnge its capacity in less than 30 minutes. Passenger/Cargo RoomThe 2016 Porsche Cayenne S E-Hybrid features pordche upscale cabin replete with leather, wood and metal trims.

The front seats are adjustable and comfortable. The back seats, which are roomy and can be reclined, have ample room for three adults. Behind the second row, the Cayenne S E-Hybrid has 20.5 porscge feet of cargo space, which is about three cubic feet less than a non-hybrid. The battery mounting under the floor means no spare tire.Hybrid-specific instruments include: a power meter replaces the traditional speedometer and a battery state-of-charge indicator. SafetyThe Cayenne S E-Hybrid comes with as robust a suite of standard and optional security features as youd expect from an $80,000 SUV.

Dual front and rear side airbags, emergency braking assist, traction and stability control, and dynamic lighting are among the many standard features. No safety testing information is available for poorsche Cayenne S E-Hybrid.

PriceThe base price of the Cayenne S E-Hybrid is $78,700, including a $1,050 destination and s charge. The vehicle qualifies for a $5,335.60 federal tax credit. The Infotainment package, at $1,990, czyenne a Bose stereo, satellite radio and integrated "online services" (including the Aha smartphone app with on-demand music, Internet radio, Facebook and Twitter feeds, traffic and weather reports and Google POI search). The Premium package, at $4,090, adds Power Steering Plus, extended LED accent lighting, adaptive bi-xenon headlights, auto-dimming mirrors, front and rear parking sensors, a rearview camera and 14-way power heated and ventilated front seats with memory functions.

Currently the Porsche Cayenne Hybrid has ascore of 9.1out of pprsche which is based on our evaluation of 47 pieces of research and data elementsusing various sources. By Sarah Shelton September 19, 2016The 2016 Porsche Cayenne S E-Hybrid is an excellent illustration of the adage, "You get what you pay for." According to the hybrif and data that drive our analysis, the Cayenne Hybrid's $78,700 price tag is balanced out by its returns, which most notably include an outstanding driving experience and a sumptuous interior.

The cherry e top is the Cayenne Hybrid's excellent predicted reliability. This same blend of yybrid, quality, and technology contributed to Porsche's win of our 2016 Best Luxury Brand award. As a midsize luxury SUV, the Cayenne Hybrid coddles occupants in a five-passenger, 2-row layout. Standard features of the elegant interior include leather accents, soft-touch materials, a power moonroof, and Porsche's easy-to-use infotainment center. It's a fun and sporty plug-in hybrid, tuned with driving enthusiasts especially in mind.

But don't be misled by the hybrid label: The Cayenne Hybrid isn't the vehicle to pick if you're looking to lower your carbon footprint with a fuel-efficient vehicle. Though a few electric-only miles can be extracted, the Cayenne Hybrid's fuel economy is paltry compared to other hybrid vehicles. Instead, the most impressive advantage of the electric motor comes into play during extreme acceleration, when it helps launch this midsize hybrid SUV to 60 mph in only 5.4 seconds.Unless the hybrid moniker is an absolute necessity (along with the acid green brake calipers exclusive to the Cayenne Hybrid), you may be better off with a different Cayenne model.

The gasoline-only base Cayenne is slightly less fuel-efficient and luxurious but also less expensive, with a starting price of $59,600.

If you want a top-performing SUV, the Cayenne S is a smidge faster than the Cayenne Hybrid, and also costs $2,500 less. The Cayenne Hybrid posrche isn't suitable if you need spacious storage, as it has one of the smallest cargo areas among luxury 2-row SUVs. Cayenne Hybrid Performance High-Performance HybridThe 2016 Porsche Cayenne S E-Hybrid is powered by a 3.0-liter V6 engine and an electric motor, which produce a combined 416 horsepower.

That's a lot of power for a luxury SUV. The 2016 BMW X5, in comparison, is rated at only 300 horsepower. Test drivers say the Cayenne Hybrid has quick acceleration and ample power, and some think it's nearly as muscular as the gas-only Cayenne, particularly when in Sport mode.Only one transmission is available the eight-speed Tiptronic automatic.

Its shifts are lightning fast and well-timed. You can also pick your own gear using paddle shifters on the steering wheel or the gear selector's manual mode. All-wheel drive is standard. Sports-Car HandlingEven though the Cayenne Hybrid weighs 5,181 pounds (which is significantly heavier than similar competitors), this SUV is very agile. While this is due in part to its Porsche DNA, a few key systems are also behind the Cayenne's excellent handling abilities.

This includes Porsche Torque Vectoring Plus (which reallocates power to different wheels) and Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control (which reduces body movement). Together, these systems make steering a breeze and keep the SUV stable through even the twistiest of roads. As with many hybrids, this Cayenne uses regenerative braking rangf slow the vehicle and recover energy.

A common complaint with these systems is that after letting off the gas, the regenerative brakes feel erratic. This isn't the case with the Cayenne Hybrid according to most reviews, its regen brakes are generally smooth. "Fuel-Efficient" is a MisnomerAs a plug-in hybrid, the Cayenne Hybrid has the ability to offer some fuel savings cahenne to its gasoline-only sibling.

But the overall difference is fairly insignificant and doesn't necessarily make up for the Cayenne Hybrid's steep price tag.According to the EPA, you can drive about 14 miles on electricity alone with the Cayenne Hybrid. Its mpg-equivalent is 47 MPGe (explained in further detail here), and with gasoline power only, the Cayenne Hybrid is rated at 22 mpg overall. This fuel economy is barely above the Cayenne and Cayenne S caynene at 21 and 20 mpg overall, respectively).

If you're looking to trim your fuel consumption, you'll be better off with the Cayenne Diesel, which gets 23 mpg overall.Read more about performance Cayenne Hybrid Interior Ultimate LuxuryEverywhere you look inside the Porsche Cayenne Hybrid, you'll find posh materials and exquisite craftsmanship. Leather is abundant, wrapping the seats, door handles, center console, and gear selector.

Porscne than two dozen options are available if you want even more leather in your Cayenne Hybrid cabin. Surfaces that arent covered in leather are finished in soft-touch materials, or you can upgrade your accents to carbon fiber, brushed aluminum, or one of four natural woods porsch yachting mahogany). The Cayenne Hybrids interior is more than just a pretty cayenbe reviewers say it's quite comfortable too. Finding just the right position is easy, thanks to front seats hybrir eight-way power adjustments and rear seats that slide and recline.

To spoil yourself and your passengers even further, add on heated seats throughout, ventilated front seats, or sport seats with 18-way power adjustments. There is even enough room rangee the back hubrid for adults.Additional standard comforts and conveniences include a power cqyenne, rain-sensing wipers, heated exterior mirrors, and a porsch liftgate.

Tech HeavyHeading up the Cayenne Hybrid's suite of innovative tech is the brand's infotainment platform dubbed Porsche Communication Management (PCM). In addition to setting audio, navigation, and communication functions with one tap, you can also swipe, pinch, and rotate menus on the 7-inch touch screen. PCM even offers additional menus when it senses your finger near an area hybriv the screen.

This system also features Bluetooth connectivity, a USB port, an auxiliary port, and a hard drive jybrid module. After a short initiation, PCM is easy to use, without the lag that hybri interfaces struggle with. Buttons, Buttons, EverywhereThe Cayenne Hybrid's cabin is saturated in opulent materials, and it is also abundant in buttons. They adorn the steering wheel, border the touch screen, and completely cover the center stack. The value of this design decision depends on how you prefer to interact with your vehicle.

If you enjoy the one-stop infotainment center, the number of redundant buttons may seem excessive. On the other hand, if you like the eyes-free convenience of a button, or if touch screens in general make you cringe, you won't be tied to the PCM when driving a Cayenne Hybrid.

Minimal Cargo SpaceWith the back seats in place, the Cayenne Hybrid has 20.5 cubic feet of cargo space. Fold these seats down, and space expands to 59.7 cubic feet. We also wanted to throw a car in the mix, something more distinctive than a sedan but nothing so flashy as to overshadow the coat. Thanks to my day job, I did have a couple different cars for him to choose from ragne the shoot.Discretion forbids me from naming the ;orsche models we decided against, but suffice it to say a coal-colored Porsche Cayenne with garnet interior was perfect for the job.

Its ranve caliperswhich are painted the kind of brilliant green usually reserved for budding spring leavessealed the deal. They showed through the Cayennes 21-inch rims like the top edge of a well-placed pocket square along the chest of a dark suit. Source: Porsche Alternative cagenne DieselThis car is freshly interesting because of what has been happening with the Volkswagen diesel emissions scandal.

I have always considered hybrid power x as mildly intriguing but more of a band-aid than a remedy for the fossil-fuel problem. Give me clean diesel or fix the problem altogether with pure-electric power a la Tesla, I thought. I still think that to some extent, despite recent events. But I also understand hubrid hybrid power has an important place porwche todays automotive market.Porsche certainly thinks so.

It has pumped hundreds of millions of dollars and more than a decade into creating its superb 918 Spyder (MSRP: $845,000before upgrades) and hybrid Panamera. And it has created this SUV: a$77,200 gasoline/electric plug-in hybrid that gets 47 miles per gallon in combined efficiency and will hit 60 mph in 5.4 seconds.

(The one I cayfnne around Manhattan for a week cost $100,850 with options.) Source: PorscheThe car has an eight-speed automatic transmission with manual shifting mode and four-wheel cayenn. Its supercharged front-engine gets 333 horsepower that, combined with the 95 hp produced by the permanent-magnet synchronous AC electric motor and 10.8-kwh lithium-ion battery pack, earns a 416-hp combined power rating. Top speed is 151 miles per hour. There are four drive modes. All that means that when you drive the Cayenne e-Hybrid, it feels like a Porsche.

It jumps like a Warmblood as you move past first gear; the more you flog it, the more eager it seems. The regenerative brakes lack the abrupt on/off action of some other hybridsa true blessing. But it porscche hesitate a hair moving forward from a standstill. The automatic start/stop function still annoys at stoplights, even though its in what seems like every luxury car these days. Electric-only mode gets only 14 mpg before switching to jybrid gasoline side.

The height of the ride (nearly 3 inches taller than, say, a $52,500 Audi Q5 hybrid) means the car does not embrace corners in quite the warm hug you might want. Photographer: Hannah Elliott/BloombergYes, its fast.

And you could buy a BMW X5 diesel ($57,700) or a Mercedes GLE diesel ($52,500) or maybe even, soon, the lightweight Jaguar F-Pace and electric Tesla X ($80,000) and get equal or better driving results.

Really. But that's a little beside the point. The appealof this car is that itmakes you feel good about your immortal soul, not your pocketbook or your racing credentials. The Cayenne is ubiquitous among a certain setwealthy suburban families, Ivymoms, Hybgid andPacific Palisadesprofessionals. If you must have one, this is the one to elevate your earth-loving cred above that of your friends. The Full Porsche TreatmentRest assured, when you drive this thing, everyone will indeed know you have been saved by the blood, as it were, of eco-technology.

The Cayenne S e-Hybrid has verdant-lined badges along its back and sides; it has those electric-green brake calipers and matching dials along the dashboard and front gauges. Photographer: Hannah Elliott/BloombergThankfully, too, the front and rear ends of the car have been sharpened over previous years to look a little less hybric. The lateral grin of the grill is wider than ever; the rear air intakes have been widened to balance the standard running LED and bi-xenon headlights at front.

Cayennes have always looked more reptilian to me than the puppy-dog Audis and gray-suit BMWs that populate the road. This one follows the trend. The tall, slightly oblong shape has never excited me, but oprsche $4,000 supple red leather interior (red seat belts cost another $650) almost makes up for that. Everything, from the hand-holds on the doors to the center console and rear head rests, is coated in it. The $1,200 roof rails, $3,965 21-inch 911 rims, and $315 sport seats are also smart additions to soften and round out the look of the Cayenne.I also frequently used the $2,000 air suspension to jack up the car even higher off the ground.

It does negatively affect handling and fuel efficiency, but I needed something to take the edge off those Tribeca pot holes, and that seemed like a porzche to do it. Since 2010 the Cayenne which until 2015 was the best selling model for Porsche, but now outdone only by the smaller Macan - has been available as a petrol-electric model. Now it comes as a plug-in hybrid, with the distinction being that you can recharge the car from a porche powerpoint for short bursts of electric-only driving.Porsche Cayenne S E-Hybrid is thirsty once it runs solely on its petrol engine. Photo: suppliedIt's that Cayenne S E-Hybrid we've jumped behind the wheel of here.

What do you get?Like other Cayennes there's a generous level of kit in the S E-Hybrid. Dual-zone air-conditioning, heated and vayenne front seats, power tailgate, sunroof, and leather trim are all part of the $140,800 deal. There's also a Bose sound system, auto headlights, auto wipers and 20-inch alloy wheels.Distinguishing the plug-in hybrid from its quartet of petrol and diesel siblings are prsche "acid green" touches, from the brake calipers and instrument cluster to the various hybrid badges around the car.But there's still plenty relegated to the options list, including the active safety systems in many rivals; lorsche auto emergency braking, caynene departure warning and blind spot warning.

The keyless entry system is also an extra cost. And there's no spare tyre; the space below the floor usually reserved for it is taken up by a battery pack. What's inside? The instrument cluster of the S E-Hybrid gets porsche cayenne s e hybrid range features for the electric motors and batteries. Porshce a battery charge gauge, for example, and a power meter in lieu of the analogue speedo (there's still a digital speedo).

Oh, and plenty of that lime green colour associated with Porsche hybrids.Other than that it's pure Cayenne inside, from the great body hugging seats and 911-esque steering wheel to the familiar array of buttons that generally does a good job of adjusting everything from the porsche cayenne s e hybrid range wheel angle and audio controls to the suspension and gearbox settings. There is decent space, too, although the Cayenne is strictly a five-seater.

Those up front are well catered for with leg room, as are those in the rear. There's good knee spaceand head room is more than acceptable. Rear air hubrid and decent seat support at least for those in the outer pews adds to the sense of occasion.A floor that sits slightly higher due to the batteries reduces luggage capacity from 670 litres porxche other Porsche cayenne s e hybrid range to 580 litres. Despite the downgrade there's still plenty of space for gear and the rear seats split-fold to fange a bigger cavity.

Under the bonnetThe raw figures on the Cayenne are good. There's 306kW and 590Nm, which is enough to get you to 100km/h in 5.9 seconds. Most of yybrid is using the 3.0-litre supercharged V6 engine.Briskthen, although to put it in perspective the non-hybrid Cayenne S gets a 3.0-litre V6 twin turbo raange with 309kW and 550Nm and betters the 0-100km/h time by half a second. But the Cayenne's party trick is being able to be frugal at porache same time.

Put that down to the petrol-electric drivetrain that's designed to porsdhe most of htbrid gentle driving duties.Around town the 70kW electric motor delivers hybrix acceleration, and the throttle stiffens half way ranbe its motion as though it's willing you not porschr push any harder.Go past that point and the petrol engine kicks in to give you more of the Porsche feel, although it's not always seamless. Plus there's no hiding the Hybrid's weight; it's 265kg heavier than the regular V6 Cayenne, for a combined weight of porsvhe are the usual caveats with an electric car it'll take a while to top it up.

Charging the 9.4kWh batteries with a regular 10 amp powerpoint takes 3.9 cayehne, or you can use a purpose built three-phase industrial porache to lower that charge to 2.6 hours. For that you'll get between 18 and 36 kilometres of electric-only driving, according to Porsche.

We found between 20 and 25km was the average.Of course the V6 engine means you never have to plug it into a wall unit and can instead use the engine to charge the batteries and drive the vehicle. But fuel use will increase dramatically; we had the onboard computer registering above 18L/100km for that time of charging and driving. And the cost?

Depending on how much you're paying for electricity it'll be a bit under $3 per charge. So the savings aren't much better than what you'd get from a gently driven Cayenne Diesel, although if you can use solar energy the cost comes down to zero, making it a lot more appealing for those rante themselves to short trips.Despite the compromises, the Cayenne is rated to tow the same as other Cayennes 3.5 tonnes, although you'd be using the petrol engine to do almost all the work.

On the roadCayennes have never been particularly cayenje by Porsche standards but they are among the best rangge SUVs on the market, with excellent grip, good poise through a corner and brilliant brakes. The last holds true for the S E-Hybrid, and the grip is good too (ours was running on optional 21-inch wheels with decent Michelin tyres). But the weight again takes the shine off the Cayenne's dynamic ability. You become aware of how much mass there is when forcing a quick direction change. There's still decent grip, but push too hard and the front tyres start to protest. The suspension, too, doesn't appear to appreciate the extra work it has to do.

In its softest Comfort setting it is surprisingly compliant and soaks up smaller bumps. But a decent speed hump or higher speed mid-corner obstruction can have it fumbling around and taking a second to settle. The Sport setting firms things up slightly but brings porsvhe more control, making hybrud a good compromise in most driving. The firmest Sport Plus setting lowers the ride height and stiffens things further, to the point where comfort levels are impacted noticeably; it's a mode best left to higher speeds and smooth surfaces.

VerdictThe S E-Hybrid nails its target of being able to travel short trips on electricity while still delivering plenty of Porsche punch. But it's compromised in the way it drives mainly due to the weight of the electric system and is thirsty once the petrol engine is used regularly.

So if you're looking for more than lots of short trips between charges there are other Cayennes that will better fulfil the brief.
